About Cafe de Lacey
A local Tasmanian coffee roaster on the world stage.
Passion for Coffee
Café de Lacey is a Tasmanian Family owned business celebrating 21 years in the coffee industry. Our founder and Director Darren de Lacey has spent much of his life invested in his passion for coffee. He spent time in PNG where he provided roasting and product development advice, while at the same time, learning much in his early days visiting coffee nursery’s, plantations, growers and processors. This time and experiences were foundational to his coffee journey ahead.
From the Highlands of P.N.G.
The generosity and hospitality of the PNG Highlanders has left a profound and indelible mark on him, he quotes; “ it is very grounding when you witness a bag of coffee cherry being pulped by hand with a large stone in a small stream, then a 100kg+ bag of parchment tethered to a spar, being hauled out of a remote village on the shoulders of two of the strongest men I have ever seen” We still play a role with PNG and enjoy roasting many of their great coffee’s.
Our Roaster, Sam, is passionate and thorough. His attention to detail has helped achieve the accolades of numerous awards at the Royal Sydney Show, Golden Bean and Royal Hobart show, including Champion Coffee 2014. All of our coffee is profile roasted on a Diedrich gas fired roaster with a post-roast de-stoner to provide maximum protection to your grinder burrs. All coffee is packed in 250g-1Kg poly lined foil bags with one way valves to preserve and maintain flavour and aroma of the coffee. We also carry a range of Capsules to suit Lavazza Blue and big Nespresso machines. We also stock portion control packs in our Goroka range for food service and catering purposes.
Café de Lacey has a full range of professional espresso machines, grinders, barista tools and accessories. Brands include, San Marino, Saeco, Bezzera, Bo-Ema, Expobar, Mazzer, Compak, La Pavoni and Ditting.
We provide full equipment support and back-up, hold most common spares in stock and provide installation and routine maintenance services. We also carry a range of water filter solutions to ensure cup quality is not compromised and equipment life is extended.
We are fortunate to have a close team that are like family, just like many of our customers are, affectionately known as our “Coffee Family”. Long-time supporter and former Roaster, John, (Darren’s father), is still seen at the company most days assisting Ben in the warehouse and a variety of other tasks, while his daughter and son both play a role also. Nick who provides I.T. support, equipment servicing and barista service in the coffee bar and Ellie, also a barista and coffee coach. Ellie works as a barista outside the company but is still involved with conference, events and coaching.
An exciting extension to our existing local and interstate customers is the export market. We have been exploring and researching the China region for a number of years and have showcased our coffee a number of times in mainland China with great success. This has helped us to develop and innovate some new blends, packaging styles that we apply locally, and soon to be released, a fantastic new branding concept. Our first concept café opened in Harbin, China in February 2015 and is enjoying an enthusiastic response to the foreign brand. It continues to grow and develop a reputation for the best coffee in Harbin. The menu continues to adapt to fuse the Western inspired offerings to the local palate. Australian customers will also be able to be part of a really innovative concept and brand story, all developed here in Hobart by some brilliant creative and artistic design professionals, Clemenger Tasmania and Karen Anderson Design.
